3 Roof Maintenance Tips for the Summer | Hercules Roofing

Summertime is here, at last, bring blue skies and snow birds to South Florida. But with that comes hurricane season, the great destroyer of Florida roofs.

Most people think of fall as the time to get up there and take care of the roof, but maintenance is a year-round activity. Now is as good a time to start as any. To get you started, here are three things you can do to help maintain your roof this summer.

1. Clean the Gutters and Drains

Florida summers are full of sunshine, soft breezes, and sudden downpours. Gutters and drains keep rainwater from piling up on the roof and help it flow to the ground. If the drains are clogged, the water has nowhere to go and can pool up and damage your roof.
Gutters help divert water from your roof down to the ground.

Just about anything can clog up your gutters: leaves, twigs, bird nests. Anything. These obstructions can cause rainwater to back up into your home, meaning lots of damage and repairs instead of that Disney vacation you were planning.

2. Check for Roofing Damage

In South Florida, just about anything can damage your roof at any time of the year — for any reason! As a homeowner, be sure to take the time to make sure that your home’s greatest protection is in decent shape.

Walk around your home and check for any signs of damage. Keep an eye out for broken shingles or other debris. If you’re comfortable with heights, scale a ladder and inspect the shingles up close and personal.

With hurricane season in effect, you’ll want to note any damage and get it repaired as soon as possible. A weak roof could spell disaster in a severe storm.

3. Inspect Your Ventilation

Your attic’s ventilation plays a pretty significant role in keeping your roof in good repair. If you notice an increased price tag on your cooling bills during the summer compared to past years, you might have a problem. Check your insulation and attic ventilation to make sure that everything is in working order.
